The Return Of Peyton Manning And All Things Football

It was an eventful first Sunday of the NFL football season. The 49ers took out the Packers in Lambeau in what might’ve been a preview of this season’s NFC Championship game, RG3 looked like the real deal in his first professional start as the Redskins upset the Saints, the new look Bears offense dominated the Colts and ruined the dawn of the Andrew Luck era in Indianapolis, everyone’s preseason darling the Seattle Seahawks came up short against the Cardinals, and the Jets whacked the revamped Bills in a game that saw Mark Sanchez shine and Tim Tebow fade into the background.

All of these games occurred earlier in the day before what many considered the marquee matchup of Week 1, that being the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Denver Broncos in a Sunday night tilt that featured the return of Peyton Manning.

I was never an Indianapolis Colts fan per se, but as the years passed I began to appreciate more and more all the little things that Manning brought to the table every week to help his team win games. From practically his first day in Indy he fit the mold of what a franchise quarterback should be – reliable, durable, accurate, polished, studious, and most importantly, a winner. Manning’s stats speak for themselves, and he will likely retire as the best regular season QB the game has ever known.

NCAA Football 2012 Top 5 Preview

College football is literally next week. I always love the preseason stuff, except the polls. The polls to me are a joke. They are based on what we know from last season and what we think will happen. At least it makes for good conversation. The preseason stuff that I love is that each team (within reason) has so much hope. Potential. Promise. We all know that there can only be one champion at the end of the year. But that is what makes preseason such a fun time. Up until the kickoff of the very first game, everyone has a chance, or so they think.

1. USC: USC is another one of the “sexy” picks to be in the national title game. Which I totally understand. They have a great squad. Matt Barkley at QB. Monte Kiffin leading the defense. Oh by the way, they added Silas Redd. What’s not to like? The only thing that I can see slowing them down is Oregon and the fact that they might have to play them twice. They have a tough at Stanford, but let’s be honest here, Stanford isn’t nearly as intimidating without Andrew Luck there. It can be tricky going up to Washington and to Utah but at this point, they are the easy favorite out of the PAC-12.

Fantasy Football or Reality Football?

Fantasy football

For those of you who do not know what fantasy football is, it is where people pick the best players from NFL teams to play on his or her fantasy team. Each player earns points based on what they do in their respective game. The points are then added together from all of a persons players to generate his or her fantasy score. The people play in leagues just as if they were really playing. The person with the highest score wins their fantasy game. They draft players like the NFL does, taking care to pick the players they believe will put up the best scores.

Now that I have explained what it is, I will tell you what I think about it. In my opinion fantasy football is the most ridiculous waste of time I have ever seen. I mean I’m sure there are people who don’t take it very serious, but there are people who make it their life. Hours upon hours spent drafting, picking up, and dropping players to try to do better. These people put so much passion into the most absurd excuse for a game.

New To Football? This Will Get You Up To Speed About The Baltimore Ravens!

So you want to learn more about the Baltimore Ravens so that when you watch games with your friends you know what they’re talking about? You’ve come to the right place!

Technically, the Ravens are one of the more recent teams in the NFL, having been established in 1996 when the owner of the Cleveland Browns wanted to move his team to Baltimore in 1996. There was some legal drama, and the end result was that the team moved to Baltimore but took a new name. The end result was:

– the players and contracts were retained in Baltimore
– even though the players were the same, it was technically a “new team”
– the Browns’ name stayed in Cleveland, and in 1999 they drafted new players and began to play again

So in 1996, the Baltimore Ravens were the same players as the 1995 Cleveland Browns, just in a new city and with a new name. And in 1999, the Cleveland Browns started back up again with different players.

Some Common Sports Handicapper Bets

Check out a few common bets placed by sports handicappers:

If-win bets – To place one of these bets, there is a fixed amount required when doing so which may need to be doubled in case the team wins or there is a tie. The new amount is placed as a bet for another team and the catch with an if-win, is that if you’re first pick was not victorious, then another one cannot be placed.

Straight bets – These are very simple and very popular. It is easy for a sports handicapper because they simply just need to determine whether a team will win or lose a game. But, a sports handicapper has to determine the points spread beforehand. This is composed by the number of points the favored team will likely win by.

Exotic bets – This adds a little spice into the sports betting market. Sometimes sports books will allow bets like these that are quite intriguing. These are picks that are very different from standard sports bets. For example, some exotic bet examples have been ones such as award shows and even the presidential race.

Scott Robarge Linkedin : The Fantasy Football Strategy of Value Based Drafting

It’s not about how many points a player scores in fantasy football, it’s about how much he out scores the other players at his position. Value Based Drafting (VBD) is a way to compare two players at different positions. Quarterbacks typically score the most points, but running backs are more valuable, because the drop off in talent happens faster. There comes a point when it is a better value to draft a great quarterback over a good running back, but what is that point? VBD can help you figure out that point so you can make sure you’re drafting the best players available. The role of the fantasy scout in fantasy football is to put together this list, also known as a cheat sheet so that casual players can have a leg up on their competition.

Theory

To get a player’s VBD number, get a set of projections from your favorite fantasy football website. To start you find the last starter and how many points that last starter is going to score. If you are in a 12 man league that starts one quarterback, you would find the 12th ranked quarterback and how many points he is projected to score this season. You would then take that the amount of points each player is going to score and subtract the amount that the last starter is going to score. Say the 12th highest quarterback is expected to score 250 points this season, you would then take the 450 points that the top quarterback is expected to score and subtract the 250 to get 200 points. This 200 points is that quarterbacks VBD number. You then do this with all the other quarterbacks to get all of their VBD numbers. If you use an electronic spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Google Documents you can save yourself a lot of time.

Next you find the last starter for running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, defenses, and kickers and do the same thing for each position to get each player’s VBD number. Then take all of the players and put them in order from the highest VBD to the lowest. Odds are there will be 6-9 running backs at the top of the list and then a quarterback or wide receiver will start to mix in as you keep listing all the players by their VBD number until all of the players are listed. You now have your list of who you view as the most valuable players based on the projections you chose. Using different projections would give you a different list of players based on the VBD numbers, but overall it probably will only have minor differences.

Positives

A good aspect of VBD is that it allows you to compare players at different positions to each other, and come up with an overall rankings, or draft list. Just because a quarterback scores more points than a running back or wide receiver doesn’t mean that he is necessarily more valuable than running back or wide receiver, and VBD can show you how much more or how much less valuable that player is. This is a handy strategy to run through if you want to come up with your own draft list.

Negatives

The downside of Value Based Drafting is that it is based purely on each players projected stats. Most prognosticators don’t plan for injuries or sway their projections to try to reflect a player’s injury risk. VBD is based purely on projections, and doesn’t take into account a players risk factor, consistency on the field or their potential.

The role of the fantasy scout in fantasy football is to take all of these intangible things and put together a list for the casual fantasy football player. Most casual players don’t want to take the time to dig through the stats and rankings, and that is where the fantasy scout would help them by creating their own projections.

Value based drafting can be a valuable tool for the fantasy scout or for a person wanting to make their own draft list. It can show you how different positions are over or under valued. It can also help you see what middle of the road players are more valuable than others. Value based drafting can help you get up a leg up on your competition in your fantasy football draft if you take a little amount of time to go through the process, and after all the point of fantasy football is to win.

Scott Robarge Linkedin : The Greatest Players in Florida Football History

The Florida Gators are a member of the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In the 106 years that the Gators have been playing football, they have won three National Championships: 1996, 2006 and 2008. The team also holds eight SEC titles and can lay claim to three Heisman Trophy winners. The top three greatest players in Florida Gators football history are quarterbacks Danny Wuerffel, Steve Spurrier and Tim Tebow.

No. 3: Danny Wuerffel, QB, (1993 – 1996)

Danny Wuerffel was a key factor in the Gators’ four consecutive SEC titles from 1993 to 1996. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1996 and led the team to a National Championship in that same year. He was a first-team All-American in 1995 and a consensus first-team All-American in 1996. He ended his career at Florida with 10,875 passing yards, 708 completions in 1,710 passing attempts and 114 touchdown passes. These numbers are still the best in SEC history and the second-best in major college history.

No. 2: Steve Spurrier, QB, (1964 – 1966)

Steve Spurrier won the first-ever Heisman Trophy for the Florida Gators in 1966. He was one of the most incredible passers in the history of the collegiate game. He played 31 games in his three-year career at Florida and had 4,848 passing yards, 482 rushing yards, 392 completions in 692 attempts and 37 touchdown passes. He was selected as a first-team All-American in 1965 and a unanimous first-team All-American in 1966. He later went on to football greatness as the head coach of his alma mater, bringing Florida its first championship while he was in charge.

No. 1: Tim Tebow, QB, (2006 – 2009)

Tim Tebow was the major reason for Florida’s National Championships in 2006 and 2008. He was the third winner of the Heisman Trophy for the Florida Gators and was the first sophomore in the history of collegiate football to be named the game’s best player. He holds the record for most rushing touchdowns for any player in the SEC. He finished his career at Florida with a passer rating of 170.8, with 661 completions in 985 pass attempts, 9,286 passing yards and 88 touchdowns. From a rushing perspective Tebow had 2,947 yards and 57 touchdowns.

Tim Tebow is easily the greatest player of All-Time for the Florida football team. He brought the team national recognition and became popularly known for his spirituality. But most significantly to Florida, he led the Gators to two National Championships because of his unstoppable play.

The team also has two Heisman Trophy winners, two National Championships, 12 Conference titles and 6 divisional titles to its credit. The top three greatest players in Georgia Bulldogs football history are David Pollack, Frank Sinkwich and Herschel Walker.

No. 3: David Pollack, DE, (2001 – 2004)

David Pollack was named a first-team All-American for three consecutive seasons, from 2002 to 2004. He is one of two players in Georgia Bulldogs history to be named an All-American three times. He holds the All-Time record for Georgia in terms of sacks, with 36. In 2004 he won the Bednarik, Lombardi and Lott trophies. Hershel Walker won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 and was the first three-time All-American in Georgia history; the only one since then was David Pollack. He is the only player in history to finish in the top three in Heisman Trophy voting three times. Herschel Walker is a highly decorated player who held 10 NCAA rushing records, 15 SEC rushing records and 30 Georgia records when he left the collegiate game. He was one of the most prominent players who left college early to turn professional, joining the fledgling USFL in 1983 after leading Georgia to a National Championship in 1980. CBS viewed him as the College Offensive Player of the Century in 1999 and he was named to the College Football Hall of Fame that same year.

Herschel Walker deserves to be recognized as the greatest player for the Georgia Bulldogs. He could also be recognized as the best player in collegiate football history. That is just how good a football player Herschel Walker was.

Scott Robarge: Skiing and Snowboarding in Scotland

Looking out my window in a small city in England, the sun is creeping through the clouds, the temperature is mild, and the chance of me having some winter sports fun is edging on zero. I sit here in utter jealously of our European counterparts with their mountain ranges and ski resorts. The only option I have is to book myself onto a ski package holiday and spend my hard earned cash on the slopes of Chamonix or Val d’Isere.

This is of course total codswallop. During the winter months we need look no further than the fantastic Highlands of Scotland for our snow sports fun. There is no need to phone the airlines and book ourselves on a cheap no frills flight to Andorra, instead pack up the boot and fill up with petrol, stick a good tune on the IPod and sit back and enjoy the ride. There are five ski resorts in Scotland, all offering great skiing and snowboarding conditions. The Nevis Range Ski Scotland resort located close to Fort William has skiing and snowboarding up to 1190 metres (3,900 feet), with skiing standards from beginners up to off-piste black runs for the pros amongst us. Not too far up the road is the Glencoe Mountain ski and snowboard resort, with its 19 runs across 7 lifts, including the longest and steepest runs in Scotland.

If you’re looking for the largest winter sport resort in the UK, then look no further than the 2,000 acre, 36 runs Glenshee Ski Centre. With a base elevation of 2,132ft with over 40km of pisted ski runs, this Aberdeenshire ski resort has something for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, including 8 green, 13 blue, 13 red, and 2 black runs. Size isn’t everything as I’m sure you’ve all heard, and this is never truer when talking about the Lecht 2090 ski resort, situated in Scotland’s largest National Park cast in the beauty of the Eastern Cairngorms in Aberdeenshire. Based 2090ft above sea level (hence its name), the Lecht 2090 Ski Scotland resort is set over 20kms with 18 pisted runs, including 7 blue and five red. The Lecht 2090 has specialist facilities for the adventurous freestyle snowboarders. These facilities include rails, box table top and jumps, and an on-site half pipe cutter. Last, but not least is the CairnGorm Mountain Ski Area, Aviemore, based at the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. On this Ski Scotland resort you can enjoy incredible views across Aviemore, Strathspey and further afield in Scotland, so as you traverse down one of the 30km of pisted runs you can soak up the famous views that Scotland has to offer. The CairnGorm Mountain ski resort is particularly well suited to cross country skiing, and has great facilities for disability snowsports.

So, am I joking when I say you can have some fantastic skiing in the UK, well, as I have just shown, NO, I am not joking. Five amazing mountain Ski Scotland resorts are fully functioning during the winter months, and even when the snow has gone these areas are perfect for walking, climbing, and cycling.
